it’s not just kids who play with dolls. we grown-ups love them just as much. call it nostalgia or to make a point or maybe just to combine the two and have a laugh in the bargain.
that’s exactly what tonya ruiz went ahead and did. she always thought strongly about the unrealistic image that dolls like barbie and ken put in front of young kids and she wanted to do something about it. that’s how her project ‘barbie gets real’ came to life.
she went ahead and created barbie dolls as they would actually look in the real world. with each of them modelled after someone in her family. this without the lens of what society thought was ‘perfect’. the project caught on and went viral; so much so that a few naysayers even called her anti-barbie.
in her next project, tonya went on to create a series of barbie and ken doll packs called ‘quarantine barbie’. you guessed it right. it’s what barbie and ken would look like in the middle of a quarantine. and it’s hilarious. right from ‘zoom ken’ to ‘binge watching barbie’ and to even a ‘quarantine quarreling couple’, each one of the packs are so relatable.
here are a few of the images from her series. you can follow tonya on her website, instagram, facebook, pinterest and twitter.
