what do you get when you mix flowers, animals, children, craft paper and a lot of patience?
you get san francisco based paper artist – kanako abe. we aren’t making this up. kanako loves these things so much that she creates intricate designs that combine at least two of them in beautiful paper cut art that tells a story within itself.
she creates in a japanese craft style called Ise-katagami that involves making paper stencils used mainly for dyeing textiles. the japanese regard this as one of the most important intangible cultural properties of japan.
kanako says that she treats paper as the finished product rather than simply a material in the process of image-making. and that is evident in the final outcome that has scenes of forests, campsites, flowers and animals all woven together.
